My Approach
Dr. Justin Gates, C.Psych.
My approach to therapy is founded on a person-centered (Rogerian) orientation. During therapy, I offer unconditional positive regard and acceptance. This means that no matter what my client shares or expresses, I do not become critical or judge them negatively - even if I disagree with something they have said or done. This approach is not like flicking a switch to turn off our judgments. Rather, it comes from years of deliberate effort, training and experience. Ultimately, I recognize that disapproval is hardly useful and distorts how people view themselves. My clients are free to share openly without concern about harsh or negative reactions! In addition to a warm, welcoming, supportive, and non-judgmental environment, following a client-centered approach means that I also value a strong therapeutic relationship for the process of change. This means that a collaborative 'team effort' between therapist and client is important. However, I also recognize that some clients are less interested in that aspect of the process and prefer a practical approach, and to focus on the skill-building aspect of treatment. I offer flexibility based on varying client needs, and seek to offer the most comfortable experience by adopting a style that matches your preferences.
With a person-centered foundation, my therapy approach adheres closely to a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) theoretical orientation. Therapy includes a focus on internal experiences (thoughts, behaviours, physiological responses, and emotions), with consideration of the broader surrounding environment (people, places, things). Skills are developed for identifying and exploring these internal and surrounding environmental experiences, and for making adjustments. For clients with difficulties managing their emotions, my approach remains cognitive-behavioural, but is influenced by emotion-focused therapy (EFT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). Using emotions in a healthy way is beneficial for clients that struggle in this area.
Assessments are completed following best practices in the profession and are approached with the aim of achieving accuracy and maximal helpfulness for clients. I provide detailed, comprehensive reports with recommendations that prove helpful and effective.
